So I went into labor on Sunday at around 3pm when my contractions started and were 10 minutes apart. As they got a little closer, we took the girls to my parents house and came back home to wait for the contractions to get closer. Around 8pm, when the contractions were about 5 minutes apart, we headed to the hospital. When we got there, I was only 3-4 cm dilated. It took a while for the contractions to get closer and stronger. By about 4am they were so intense that I had to start pushing. The baby was ready to come out almost right away at that point, but the doc wasn't in the room, so I had to just pant through the contractions until the doc got into the room so I could push. Thankfully the pushing part didn't take very long and he came out safely at 4:20am weighing 8 lbs and measuring 19.5 inches! Unfortunately, my experience didn't stop there. Usually the afterbirth process is about 15-30 minutes. Mine was about 2.5 hrs this time around. The doc spent much of that time pushing down hard on my uterus trying to get the bleeding to stop. My Factor XI deficiency did pose a problem. They gave me three different types of medications to control the bleeding, but they didn't seem to help fast enough and the doctor was concerned, so they gave me fresh frozen plasma. Eventually, the bleeding has gotten better. We thought we could go home today, but my bloodwork came back from this morning and my platelet count has dropped, so we are here at least another day. We're praying that it will either stay the same or go up and that we'll be able to go home tomorrow.
On the bright side, we have a beautiful, healthy baby boy! I just love this new little man in my life! What a precious gift from God!
